Sean Jones was named the Head Coach of the Reservoir football team this past offseason. Unfortunately, he didn't have the summer to prepare for this transition like most do. Jones was named the Head Coach only days prior to the season beginning. In a single move, many lives surrounding the Gator football team were turned upside down. Coach Jones immediately shouldered a huge burden. His family had to account for his new position and the extra hours of work it would create. The coaching tree was shook-up and he had to quickly reorganize some coaches and hire others to account for varsity and jv teams. Every one of his players had to quickly adjust to a new coach with a new style, a new staff, and the distractions of questions surrounding their outgoing leader.
Many questioned how the Gator team would respond. The answer came abruptly as they begin the season 2-0 and pitching two shutouts against Hammond and Centennial and holding a 56-0 scoring advantage in those games!
Coach Jones is a good football coach and he's a good person. He did what was right for those kids and stepped up and wouldn't let their season be ruined by an unfortunate turn of events. The Scholastic Sports Net staff had the pleasure of working with Coach Jones for our Game of the Week last week and he was professional, courteous, and very accommodating.
The Gators will be widely regarded as underdogs entering this week's matchup with Marriotts Ridge. But then again, they were considered underdogs entering the season and look how they have responded.
